Question of the Day

How would you define a hero?

[identity profile] ex-nothingto835.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Someone who thinks of someone else's safety, or wellbeing, over their own.
In a more literal sense *points to icon* YATTA!

Heh... he's cool!

Someone who is "fruity" enough to work at the firm who produces these?

In a slightly cheesy fashion....

My idea of a hero/heroine is along the lines of Jack from Titanic - someone who is capable of saving a person, not just in a literal sense (ie:saving their life) but more than that... someone who can make you see things as they are and stop walking round in a zombified daze.

He was great :D

I don't think I'll share my definition. After going to the link you posted yesterday and reading some of what others have to say, I don't think my ideas would be all that welcome. :) I will say I believe the world needs heroes. Needs them badly.

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
All ideas are welcome! Heh... I like to hear ideas that are different... They give me a great persepective :)

[identity profile] mighty-rontor.livejournal.com 2007-07-25 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone who's scared to do what needs to be done to make the world a better place, but does it anyway.

"Selfless actions" is total bullshit, too. The hero, whether modest or not always hopes that they will either be able to enjoy the fruits of their efforts or that their own suffering will be minimal. I mean for shit's sake, we're only human, right? We seek the adoration of our peers or those who survive us. We want to go to heaven because we are selfish. I find it ironic that our selfishness makes us selfless.

[identity profile] mighty-rontor.livejournal.com 2007-07-25 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm reposting that on my journal

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2007-07-25 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Spoken like a true cynic... ;)

But you're right, to an extent. My driver for being selfless is in the joy it gives me, I get greedy for that feeling. But that small bit of selfishness has to be balanced against the greater effort required to be selfless...

Everything's in the balance.

[identity profile] mighty-rontor.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
So what you're proposing is that perhaps selflessness may have an element of selfishness, but that the difference between the two is that selflessness is also beneficial to others. And it's not completely one-sided, so it's a more balanced.

Wow. That is a damned sexy concept.

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
You got it :D

[identity profile] eternalxwhisper.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
A hero is someone who is willing to risk everything for the sake of others. A person who is willing to die to save a stranger. The courage to step up and take action without the selfishness of wanting something in return.

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
A good definition :D
