Question of the Day

If victory comes at a high cost, is it truly a victory?

[identity profile] cmerun12.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
A win is a win. No matter how high the cost. It may well be a 'hollow' victory, but it's still a victory.

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Very true.

Although, the more hollow the victory, the closer you are to a draw...

[identity profile] cmerun12.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a matter of perspective.

Only if you still believe in the morality of both your cause and the means that brought you to victory.

Good hearing from you last night, by the way!

Belief makes it the cost more bearable? Good point!

Yup, it was great talking to ya!

Good question... like if someone wins in Israel but at the cost of almost the whole population dying, I don't consider that a victory.

But if the goal is ultimately worthwhile, then I guess any cost. I'm going to use a Christian example (I apologize). Like Jesus having to be crucified and going through all that was a high cost but worth the "victory". (I'm iffy on the religion stuff but at least the stories are good ;) )

Two good points...

I believe victory is a very subjective term. That means there is a defined win or loss and often life doesn't work that way.

Great point :)

if it's the super bowl, yes. if you spend a million bucks to win a hundred thousand, no.

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No the Bengals aren't going to the show, so stop dreaming now... :P

[identity profile] crescent-fresh.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
look buddy, the last time the bengals were in the super bowl it was in miami. it's chad johnson's hometown, so he's got the extra drive there, and we know we won't have to play the 49ers (and that bastard joe cool), so victory is assured!

:D

Oh the wonderful memories :)

"You see these nice white pearly teeth?
Well, ya know they ain't my own.
Mine rolled off like chiclets
Down a river in San Antone.
But I left that person cursin' nursin' seven broken bones.
And he only broke three of mine, so that makes me..
The winner."

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's one way to look at it... :)

[identity profile] sagespice.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
it depends on how high the cost. I lost someone I cared for because I wanted too much victory. The cost was/is too great and I've lost in the long run. So, it depends.

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
You're the first person who raised the "long term" costs of an expensive victory...

[identity profile] kosta-pasta.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
depends. If you haven't followed Machiavelli's words to achieve a goal, then it's ok.

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL!

[identity profile] avis-noctis.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if the final achievement is worth more to you than what you had to give away in order to make that achievement. It's all in the perspective. It's only a victory if you feel like you came out on top.

[identity profile] ayoub.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep :)

[identity profile] ornjkitty.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on: a) how high a cost, b) the nature of the victory, and c) how many reasonable compromises you passed up on the way to getting things totally your own way.

(If the other side was the one being uncompromising and unreasonable, part of the victory was probably that they did not take a bigger chunk out of your hide!!!!)
