Today is Live Journal Amnesty Day.

Many people have a lot of friends on their list. Some they like, some they know in real life, some they never read, some they added in haste and feel too guilty to remove themselves.
Well worry no more. I am declaring today as a de-friending amnesty day.

If you added me to your friends list and you never read what I write or don't like what I write or just don't want my often pointless and generalising ramblings cluttering up your friends pages any more, today is the day to unfriend me. Do it. Go ahead, don't feel bad about it. I promise that I won't bear a grudge, that's what Live Journal Amnesty Day is all about. I'm sure that everyone has names on their friends list that they haven't the heart to get rid of because they're harmless really, but you just don't read what they write any more. Don't worry about it if I am that person in your list, you don't need to comment, you don't need to explain why - just unfriend me, that's the point of today.

There is only one problem with a post like that. If someone doesn't read your journal, but just skips the entries before moving on to those entries they do read, they aren't going to read that this is their get out of jail free card

maybe they read but just do not comment. i think it's unfair to expect people to comment and to assume they don't read if they aren't big on commenting.

Two Christmases ago, I invited anyone to delete me if they didn't want me as a friend on LiveJournal, Bebo, Facebook &c. Yet I also made it clear that if anyone took up my offer, it would count as a symbolic gesture and they shouldn't try to get in touch in the future. Generally, I only clear LiveJournal friends out when they haven't updated for more than fifty-two weeks. Strangely enough, I was going to check that this week anyway.
