France & England, the summer I turned 19. I actually went to Canada the year before, but that was literally an afternoon slip across the border. I'm not sure if it counts. Were I to go to Canada today, I'd make sure it counted!
Abroad? Well, the only time I've been outside my country was when I lived in Michigan, just outside Detroit, and crossed the Detroit River into Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Most Michiganders don't consider Windsor to be 'outside', but me, being from Texas, thought it was pretty neat. Wasn't very different, just the money and the weird accent. Aboot? What boot? Since I've never even been to Mexico (and it's not that far), it was a big deal to me. But why would I want to go to Mexico?
I have only left the United States once, for an afternoon of exploring and an evening of drinking tequila in Neuvo Larado, Mexico. It was great fun though!
does it count when the country doesn't exist anymore :D we moved to East Germany when I was 2 wish we had stayed, but mother needing a psychiatric hospital interfered.
Yes I have, my parents liked to travel, so the first country would probably have been USA. Probably just a dive over the border on the way to some place west in Canada.
I guess my first trip out of the country was to Toronto when I was about 9 (it's just not very far from where I live). My first trip "abroad" was to Scotland when I was 20.
I took a cruise to Bermuda in Sept. 2004. The vacation was bright, shiny, and life affirming and just what I needed. :) I remember pulling up to the cruise ship dock and being soooo excited to see the flags of other countries flying*. I was mentally squealing "my first visit to another country, eeee!!!! Yay yay yay!" or something like that. *g*
*Not that I have anything against my own country and its flag *g*, but I'd always wanted to travel and this was my first non-US trip.
Canada was my first trip...then Bermuda...then Mexico (I've lived near both borders...but do they count since they are technically on the same continent but different countries?!)
Yes. Canada. Been twice. Both times were like very bad sitcoms - the ones where all the vacations go horribly wrong. Perfect Strangers comes to mind.
In any case, I will never ever ever be going to Canada again - unless the gods are excruciatingly cruel.
Edit: And Canada counts. You said country, not continent. I've been to two different parts of it: east and mid-west. Anyway, Canada is way more evil than the U.S. - more subtle, but that's what makes it more evil!
Canada was the first "international" trip I ever took. It was for my brother's soccer tournament and was fun. NOt all that culturally relevant though. We also, we took a cruise to New Brunswick & Nova Scotia one summer & have been to CA several other times for various reasons.
A more notable trip was when I went to Belize, Central America when i was a teenager. I went there 2 summers in a row for missions. It was amazing and I love that country.
Then i went to Israel for a tour with my school (i got school credit after coming back and taking a test/writing a paper). IT was incredible... and i want to go back.
We went to Mexico on our Honeymoon.
I want to visit most of Europe, Australia, Egypt, and various other locations around the globe. Who knows if i'll ever make it there... but one can hope. ;-)
