French towns get emergency powers

Those wonderful French authorities. Impose a curfew, while Lyon's entire public transport service is shut down by a petrol bombing.
Peace will only come to France at a terrible cost, and I fear it.

Is France returning to peace?

It looks like it.

Nicholas Sarkozy has ordered the expulsion of all foreigners convicted of taking part in the riots.

This interests me. It's the first sensible move I've heard.

Immigration is something I have strong feelings about, so bear with me here.

Looking at it from a British perspective, I'm the son of an immigrant couple. One of which worked hard, paid taxes, and was a useful member of society, and the other, worked hard, paid taxes, and got involved in improving the lives of others through local politics. These are the kind of people who we should be welcoming into the country. People who make a positive contribution.

But there are so many others. Some who come here to commit crimes, some who live off the taxes I pay, and can't even be bothered to learn the language, and others still, who live off benefits, and still work, and send all of their swindled earnings back to the motherland.

In my opinion, if you've never paid taxes after moving here, you shouldn't get benefits. Period. And if you move here and are convicted of a crime, forget jail, or community service, Get your ass back to your motherland and stop coming here to make our lives a misery.

So for once, I agree with a French idea. I agreed with their opposition to the Iraq war, but we all know that was for their own reasons.

I wrote this back in 2003, and every time I read it, it surprises me that I wrote it.

If anyone asked me for my best work, this would be it...

If I was forced to give it a title, it would be "World's twilight journey"...

In blood hued sky float pieces of night
Reflecting nothing to the land below
Each shadow is respite from an angry sun
And it's scorching crimson shards

Soundless wind gathers dust to its breast
Refusing to leave the ashen land behind
Travelling, searching for life somewhere
Revealing only the depth of the scars

Barren land moves away from the heat
Only to be frozen by a moonless night
Stars above are dimly mirrored below
By the glittering black of ice sheened ash

But memories linger in each ashen flake
Of a time before this empty existence
A time where blood flowed freely within
Rather than darkly staining the sky
