I expect a lot out of the people I call friend. They don't always have to agree with me, or even do things I like, but they have to be there for me when I need them, and be willing to at least listen to me when something is wrong. A friend, to me, isn't just someone I call to hang out, but someone who takes the time to call me, or just keep contact for the sake of keeping contact. It's a mutual benefit to both parties to maintain a friendship.
Someone who knows the bad and good parts of you but still loves you. Someone who will tell you if you look/are acting bad and then do their best to help you look/be better. Someone who makes you feel better about yourself and life when you are around them. And someone who will stand by you even if they know you're wrong.
For me to call someone a friend means that I trust them at least on some level. It means I can depend on them to be there for me when I need them, and I will make time to be there for them when I'm needed. It means I talk to them because I want to and not because I will feel guilty or fear a drama if I don't.
friendship = CONSISTENT loyalty. Without the consistency, a friend might as well be some stranger in the street who runs after you to give you something you dropped out of the bag. Without the consistency, all you have is blind trust.
It's funny because some of my best friends dont live close to me. I believe you can have a connection with someone that has a lot more to do with things besides physically hanging out with someone, though that's cool too. My best friends have been my friends through years and dont just want to hang out with me when I'm happy. They are the people who come to your house when your in tears and cheer you up by making stupid jokes.
Depends on the level of friendship. If I am the sun of my own little egocentric universe, then there are orbits in which groups of "friends" fall into.
Those I truly call Friends are in the closest orbit. They are loyal, wonderful people who have proven themselves to me time and again through fair and foul weather. These are the people I am happy to reciprocate that level of friendship with (present company included). In fact, I really wish I could do more for them besides just keeping my own head above water.
Next out are Acquaintances. These are people I get on well with, but we're not close. We might see one another and say "Hello, what's happening?", but we're not going to drop everything to run to one another's aid.
Let me add that in Renfaire friendships, there is a fine line between Friend and Acquaintance. While Faire is on, these are your friends, but in the off season we fade back into acquaintances.
On the last level out are the people I'm nice to, so that there won't be drama. I am surface congenial, but I think nothing of them once they are not in my vicinity.
Friend = unconditional, consistent loyalty and respect. Unique understanding helps, but is not actually a necessity. They do not have to share my views, tastes or ideas, but they must respect what I am. There has a be a certain level of devotion, and always trust. The ability to take some kind of mutual pleasure or fulfillment in their presence/personality is required.
I usually discern "friends" from "acquaintances" in that acquaintances are those with whom I am either on neutral or mildly bland terms with, and friends are those who evoke deeper emotions of joy, peace and/or satisfaction of some kind in me. Friends are those who give each other mutual delight, comfort and love.
my friends love to make me laugh, and share their thoughts and feelings with me, and listen when i need it, and tell me if i'm being a total bitch, and thru everything we can still just kick back and have fun together.
My friends are very much my family. They're people who despite my shortcomings accept me and see me for who I really am. It's easy to hang around when someone's feeling good... real friends see you at your worst and never think less of you for falling down.
This is not a question that can be answered by a simple "post + reply", but I will try to sum it up. It means, to me, trust, reliance, and family when there is no family.
