When all your thoughts are scattered, how do you find focus?

You don't ... it'll come to you eventually. There's no law that says you have to think in a straight line.

Try not to think of a polar bear :)

It depends on what I need to focus on. Sometimes I just need to talk to someone. Sometimes I need to go and sit at my coffeeshop and work where I don't have the distractions of home. Sometimes I need to go to the library and work where I have no distractions. Sometimes, it just means I need to take care of some of the things that are causing my thoughts to scatter, and then the focus comes as a natural byproduct.

I think it depends on my overall mood, if relatively calm then I (and this sounds crazy) speak to myself, telling myself what I need to prioritise, if I am not calm then it all goes to s**t and I am next to useless.

It's all about the process for me.

I start off with total mayhem in my head.

Then I talk to myself (yea, I get good answers) out loud or in my head, depending on where I am. Or, I write about it on LJ. Mental choas and all.

Then as I begin to process, I think to myself, "lets tackle one issue at a time."

I make a list of what is in front of me that I can take care of today and what future issues am I projecting that I can't do anything with until the time comes.

Usually works for me, but there are times I'm unable to focus.

See, scattered to me, means overwhelmed and out of order. So, my answer might be goofy, but it works for me!

I used to go and stare at my favourite painting in Manchester Art Gallery (Hylas and the Nymphs).

Now my only option is to write or pray.

I go to my room and close the door. No music, no TV, no distractions.

Either that, or I start housecleaning. I don't need my brain to do that, so when I clean, my mind will focus on other thoughts.

I lean far enough forward that if I don't move I'll fall, and then go wherever straight ahead takes me.

I take a nap. Honestly, it helps a lot. Specially when the nap starts off by being cuddled by a hubby or a kitty. :)

uhhhhhhh my thoughts are always scattered. i just got used to it. i take deep breaths and try not to get overwhelmed. i'm like extremely emotional at times. so, i try to center myself and then i organize my thoughts into 'fucked up thoughts', 'delusional thoughts' and 'okay that makes sense thoughts' its a whole lot of nonsense!

By pulling myself out of my head and into the "real" world. It helps me gain perspective, which helps me to focus.

I organize the physical things around me that are out of order. Sometimes that helps me focus on the inside. Yoga seems to help, too.

I usually pray. Deep breaths....close my eyes....I also usually go to the restroom...That is my think tank. If I'm really scattered...a relaxing bubble bath does the trick. :D

Sometimes, my scattered thoughts are best left as they are. I don't feel too bad about it most of the time. I sort of think of it as my brain matching my room, LOL.

Coffee, though. If I really need to focus on like a project for school or something or if I have writer's block. Good coffee sort kickstarts my brain just right.

I don't. I'll go off and do something, read, play with graphics, come on live journal and then I'll go back to them at a later date.
