Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.

I was thinking, as I do, while firmly in one of my delusions of grandeur... Wouldn't it be awesome if, on the Fifth of November next year, at five pm, everyone in every democratic country in the world stood shoulder to shoulder in silent peaceful protest for five minutes, just to show our leaders that we are awake, alive, and we will be heard. To show them that we demand peace, justice, and freedom. And maybe, just maybe, lift the spirits of all of us...

Wouldn't that just be so awesome?

Peace will come... when humans are extinct.

I don't mean to put a cow-flap on your fantasy, but there are unfortunately many so-called democratic countries - the US of A among them - that wouldn't have a clue what you are talking about.

Meaning to say that our government may not know what he is talking about, but our people would.

I was only referring to Guy Fawkes Day. Even you have to admit that Americans' knowledge of other countries lesser known traditions can be a might scanty.

While their are many Americans who do wish for an end to war, America is a biggggg country, and as you know there are many within it who think they are putting an end to war by starting new ones.

I see.  That was a bit hard to differentiate, given your broad, sweeping statement, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

I know how big America is, I live here, I've traveled her countryside.  I also hear and read what the everyday people here think.  Despite what domestic and foreign press will have you believe, the majority of Americans are absolutely fed up and are ready for some serious changes in the way this country's government is currently running the show.

Perhaps I should lay a few of my credentials o the table. I was born in the United States and my daughter still lives in California. I left there 25 years ago becausre even way back then I hated what I saw. So I think it reasonable to say that I have some experience of America.

Unfortunately for your hypothesizes, my experience is that most Americans only communicate with other Americans who feel the same as they. This results in everybody believing that they hold the majority opinion. I do not doubt the integrity of your beliefs - but I question whether they really do represent the views of the majority of Americans. The mid west and south are full of people who don't exactly share these beliefs. Perhaps the coming election will prove you right and me wrong - for the world's sake. I hope so.

I think that there's a validity to what you say about Americans. We do tend to be socially insular or provincial for sure. The only time we break the inertia and band together is when something reaches us at the common emotional core. Gradual change is not an option for us. It's our enemy. Gas prices creep up, we bitch and complain about it, but "what are you going to do?" I guarantee if the prices shot up $3 a gallon, there would be blood in the streets of DC. Show the clarity of an absolute and people will become polarized. Polarization yields a result.

I don't think it's so much that as "hunting down those darned terrorists." Not that our current policies work worth a flying fuck. We should take a more Mossad-like approach. Assassination can solve a great many problems if kept covert or, better yet, clandestine.

I didn't know spit about Guido Fawkes before the movie. The world can not begrudge the US a lack of knowledge of every holiday on earth. The reason why everyone else knows what holidays we have is because we market them better than anyone else. Brazil is famous for Carnaval, but just as celebrated and just as wild in splendor is the Feast of St. John; yet no one who's not Brazilian knows about it. Scanty knowledge is a relative thing.

Maybe, but hopefully not in my life-time, especially given my first hand experience of the after effects.

Given my first hand experience of what happens when a current situation is allowed to continue and fester, bringing forth nothing but stagnation and ill effects, I'm willing to give revolution a try.  Besides, revolution can happen on many levels.  The one I am waiting for consists of the power of the vote and the voice of the people shouting "Enough!".  I'm a firm believer in what Ghandi once said:  "Be the change you wish to see in the world".

That's not revolution as I understand it - that is legitimate and lawful change.
If you want to experience the aftermath of real revolution come over here to the Baltics or to Russia
Change is good - is necessary, but revolution leaves a society with a psychic hangover that can last for years and years.

That is definitely a thought I like. You should get word out now. So by next year, everybody knows about it. It would hopefully be a wake-up call not only to our governments but just the world as a whole.
