Art is a pretentious pandering to the human experience; an anullment of feeling that killed the inspiration beyond the latest craptacular gallery of shite.
I really don't like art. I like the idea of art. But art itself has been so denuded and then layered with mouth-breathers and prissy snobs that it's lost all the mystique and power it once wielded.
Art to me is an expression of one's inner self. Another words, "an emotional response." This goes for the person creating and others visualizing anothers work.
You realize I could go on and on about this, yes? *grin* Ok but specifically, to me it means vision, perspective, clarity - certainly not decoration, certainly not just for the eyes.
As an artist, I've always loved the notion that people will say, "Look at the big picture" instead of "look at the big word, the big song, etc."
i don't *care* whether somebody else declared an item "art" & thinks it should be worth money. i don't care about the fundamentals of its composition, its materials, or its suitability to the cultural needs of its generation. or, rather, i can care--i've been moved by the symmetry of a perfectly balanced arrangement, i've worshipped at the feet of the rock gods chilled by their cultural acuity, but that's not what makes it art.
art takes place in two places: the creative experience of the creator, and the creative experience of the viewer/listener/receiver making meaning and resonance out of what he/she sees. artifacts don't have it on their own.
Art is an expression of feeling. Someone seeks comfort and joy in their writing while others share their passions and desires in poetry, others do it through art.

Art is describing your universe to others...
