If you were to create your own religion, what would its basis be?

Argh!  There's that "r" word again!  I would not create a religion.  I would rather people think for themselves.

Pantheistic Gnosticism- or "Pangno" for sort.

Date: 2008-12-03 01:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mighty-rontor.livejournal.com
It would be based on taking what lessons that can be garnered from as many religions as the practitioner knows about without any of the intolerance or condemnation.

Pangnoes would be expected to further their own spiritual needs first, no matter what path that furtherance gravitated to. In other words, if their discoveries led them to be a practicing Shintoist, Cabbalist, Wiccan, atheist or Lutheran; that would be fine.

Pangnoes would also be expected to treat people politely and with respect so long as it didn't interfere with their spiritual needs or so long as the person they are dealing with isn't belligerent to them.

Another tenet would be that seeking to proactively convert people would be expressly forbidden. People should want to seek out Pangnoes of their own free will, and never the other way around.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

You know... it's weird that you ask this. I've actually been building an imaginary religion as kind of a personal project. I'd like to have it be the basis of a future novel (or series of them) as well as maybe some other things. It's still in the very early stages, as I just haven't had time to work on it, but here are some key points.

- It completely prioritizes mind over body. In fact, bodies are considered completely insignificant.

- It revolves around humanitarian concepts. Things like materialism, superficiality, and selfishness are not "allowed".

- It is a sin to try to define God within this religion. (Still haven't totally thought that part of it through yet.)

I know it kind of sounds "cultish", and it's supposed to, but I want it to kind of make some interesting points at the same time within the scope of the books.

Mine is based in chivalry, hospitality, sublimity, and liberty...and the place where they meet is Love.
