If you had the money, would you buy Livejournal inc? If you did, what would you do with it?

Hell yeah! And I'd push for a little more smoothness in how the system operates rather than add shiny new features.

Ahahaha. You know when I first heard about these "troubles" I totally thought 'if only'. Y'know, if only I could own LJ. I, however, don't really think I'd know what to do with it if I did own it asides from making sure it doesn't disappear. I fail at plans like that.

I'm not sure if I'd want to put up with the whining from all the fandom communities or the teenagers with free accounts who seem to have it in their heads that free means everything is free and they should have the same features as those of us with paid or permanent accounts.

I'd buy it.
I'd try to sort out Scrapbook so it's easier to use and navigate around

Amen to that! The Scrapbook feature is so impossibly counter-intuitive that I almost NEVER store pictures on LJ.

I make all of my LJ posts via Semagic, which helps me upload pictures to scrapbook at the same time as making the post. I never go back into Scrapbook itself because it's so un-user friendly. If I ever want one of the pictures again, I go to the post I first made and take the embedded code from there.

I would try to figure out a way to run it without ads. Or I'd find better advertising!

The problem being that some advertisers are scared of the content of some journals.
I don't like the ads, but then I never have to see them because I bought my first paid account before they were introduced and have since bought a permanent account.
The Ads do at least help pay to keep LJ running. I think the idea that only the free accounts get to see them is a good idea, thus giving more benefit to those that chose pay.

I agree. I have a paid account, so I usually don't have to see them when I'm logged in. But if I create a free account for some other purpose, I have to deal with the ads, and I find that annoying. But at least the ads aren't as intrusive as they are on myspace!

No, if I had that kind of money I would give it to people who need it desperately. I can't justify spending that amount of money for something people can do in a paper journal (as much as I love LJ and all). That amount of money needs to be funneled to something and someones who can better their lives with it.

You seem to be implying that LJ is incapable of bettering someone's life in a meaningful way. I have to respectfully disagree.

I didn't say that. You took what I said out of context. I never said that LJ couldn't be a meaningful and enriching place. I personally don't feel like I could spend that kind of money on LJ when there are people in the world who desperately need that kind of money. It is my opinion (you can disagree) that people who are suffering (disease, famine, poverty, etc) would get the money if I had that sort of cash.

Then suppose for the sake of argument that we had cured all disease, ended famine and were working on a world-wide economic model that kept every human on Earth at a level of comfort they themselves were comfortable with. What would you do then with LJ, relative to Ayoub's question?

It would still be a no and only because it would be too much trouble. I don't want to be the one responsible if people didn't like how the place was being run. Purchasing a social networking/blog is just too much drama for me haha.

The reason LJ has worked out better for me than a paper journal is at least it gives me the illusion of writing for someone else, another select group of people. So I've been faithfully updating LJ for 6 years while I never had a paper journal that really lasted.
So I can't consider it something you can just as easily do in a paper journal. First, everything is in type so it can be more easily distributed. Second, the whole date and time feature, while it might not seem like a big deal, the fact that it keeps track of that for you easily probably saved large amounts of time and effort over the years.

Now if I had the money, I can't say either whether I would buy it outright. I mean I love LJ, so maybe I'd consider helping them hire all those people back and encourage them to make better decisions. But I know nothing of being incharge.

Plus, there are so many other things to spend money on- like art supplies and books. :P

I think that is fantastic you feel this way. As much as I love LJ personally I wouldn't be bothered if it disappeared one day. I don't mean to be dismissive to anyone by what I said but I just don't have the attachment to this place as a lot of people do. Not that I am saying there is anything wrong with those who do. I mean I've met a lot of great people through this site and I enjoy the features but if anything were to happen to the site it wouldn't bother me one bit. I don't post anything of what I would consider deeply personal on my LJ anyway (as I use my paper journal for that as I prefer to keep those things to myself). LJ for me is just a better myspace. Now even with that said I don't dismiss the fact that LJ provides a lot of meaning for many people who use it for me I don't see it like that and that is my right.

All I personally said was I would never use the money to buy LJ because I can think of many other things that deserve that money. In my previous response that money should go to people in dire need.

My initial thought on this question was, if I had that kind of money I think there are other things/people that need it more than LJ.

However if it was a buy LJ or nothing.... eh I'm still not sure I would buy it because I don't know that I would want the responsibility. I love it, and been a member for eons, but to actually own it and run it... that's not really my cuppa tea.

If I did own it, (must have happened through inheritence) I would sell it or donate it to someone who could nurture it and give it the attention it needed.

Yes! And I would work on making things work correctly/easily... flashy things don't matter to the majority of LJ users (me included). The only other thing i might do is allow more user pics than currently allowed (for a fee of course). I honestly would love to be able to have a decent number more than i currently can buy.

See, if I had the money to buy LJ, I wouldn't buy LJ.

I'd get a nice house somewhere quiet and warm, take Dave to Graceland, buy a King Charles Spaniel puppy, put enough in the kitty to finish qualifying and set up a psych practice, plus be able to get some regular reki and massage to treat the M.E.

Then, maybe I could buy LJ and hire enough people to run it without me if there was enough left over :o)

If I was filthy rich beyond avarice I would buy LJ and, asides from just simply keeping it alive, make sure it didn't become Facebook part III. (MySPace is desperately trying to wrench itself into Facebook part II at the moment.)

Livejournal is a place for people who like to read and write. It's not the place for lots of annoying bling and 5 billion stupiod "applications".

Oh hells no! The bulk of LJers are a bunch of whiny self-serving egotists that bitch and complain at the drop of a hat, and most of them don't contribute enough for the amount of shit they give the owners for the smallest infraction.

And I say this as one of those self-serving egotists - who has the audacity to occasionally think having a seven year old permanent account actually means anything. LOL!!!

I would make them purge the suspended usernames.

Since I've been with LiveJournal, it has had three owners but not one of them has lifted the rule that says once a Journal is suspended, the name is never re-used.

That's why I'm stuck with the inferior [livejournal.com profile] knaw_says and not the succinct [livejournal.com profile] knaw, because some idiot took the name and couldn't behave themselves.
