not even close.

I mean... you take what you can grab and squeeze in the freedom department, but comittement and responsibility - by definition - remove any hint of freedom from the individual.

Actually I've asked myself that question many times. I thought that after Jason went to jail, I would finally feel free but I don't feel that way because my mind has been consumed with the thoughts of "what will happen when he gets out in April?" and that takes away the freedom I thought I once had.

I don't think I could ever be truly free whilst in the presence of other people, in whatever way. Society (that is, fellow humans) alters the way I act and think, even if in the smallest of ways. Even I do not consciously consider these alterations to be restrictions, I am not truly free while with other people. Id est, I am not in my natural state.

This doesn't imply that I want to be "truly free", ultimately. There is choice between utter freedom and loneliness. I try to balance it, but sometimes desire for one overtakes the other.

It all depends on how you define it.

I'm free in that the only things restricting my freedom are things I chose and want and allow to restrict it...

...except for this whole having to make money thing. But I suppose if I really wanted I could shun other people and society, give up my citizenships, and live without money... but I want other people and I want a lot of the things society gives me, so I suppose that is a choice too really. So I am free to chose my own bonds. I don't think people would do well without any though.

Yes, amazingly, enough. Shackled as I am to husband, job, good friends and religion, I find that I am enjoying a much greater degree of freedom now than I did when I lacked these various restrictive forces in my life. Funny old world.

No. One is always a slave to something. True freedom is akin to total control and absolute power: the ends of hyperbolic illusions in order to give the mind a reference from where to work from or sustain hopes. Kings are slaves to their subjects, and emperors are slaves to the well-being of their client states.

Yes. I can choose towards a path or against it, regardless of what morals society imposes. Anyone can choose to coldly and methodically go against what "should" be done and simply ignore what consequences lie after the action.

Maybe. Ultimately, it's a matter of my mood at the time. =)

I find it interesting that many commented above about the lack of freedom because of other relationships (husband, girlfriend, family, etc.) I don't think other people have anything to do with it. It is our own minds that give us freedom. So, in that regard, yes, I am truly free.

...and to continue this thought, its about choice. You choose to stay in a relationship, you choose to go to work. While I don't feel very free Monday through Friday from 8:30 until 5:30pm, it is my choice to get up and go to work. So, I am, in fact, free because I can choose not to go to work. Now, consequences are an entirely different matter.

It is how one sees and defines freedom. How free is a person? as free as they allow themselves to be, more so, if they truly give themselves wings. I don't think freedom is curtailed by people and things. I think we are the ones who ultimately choose to give up or give in. It's easier to feel we give up our freedom to responsibility but I'm not sure if that's true. I think we just give in to responsibility - it's just another task in this life.

I think as humans we will always be a "slave" to something because we're too afraid to let go.
