Your mind is free, even though it's trained to be chained.

You can think about anything you want. Think about everything.

Your actions are chained by law, responsibility, the weight of consequence, and respect for others.

Life is duality.

We have light and darkness in us, and our freedoms represent that.

I wonder if, as a race, we can eliminate the darkness and become truly free?

without the darkness though we only have half the learning, half the personal growth. there must be both light and dark to complete the picture, dear man.

One day the human race may be able to let go of the dark, or at least understand it fully, and come to terms with it, but the question remains as to whether we'll blow ourselves to kingdom come before that happens...

:D

There is a duality in everything...

I have a respect for the darkness. I truly believe I wouldn't be the person I am today without it. We need to embrace it to understand it. :)

The darkness in me has ebbed for a while, but if it returns, I'll give it voice in my writings as usual...

That satisfies it...

Up until recently, I thought that every aspect of the universe existed in a state of perpetual dichotomy. Now, I think that it's actually trichotomous. The only actual dichotomous existence is in the mind. The two extremes of good and bad, light and dark are polar standards that we steer our lives by. Nobody lives on a pole. They live in between them. The poles are just reference points. If you eliminate one point of reference, you'll get lost. You don't have to be evil, you just have to know what evil is so you can keep away from it. There's positive, there's negative and there's the tension between them. Even matter is made of triplets of quarks.

I think darkness is vital, but is often misunderstood. Since to me darkness is to light as chaos is to order, I think the human race has often misinterpreted darkness for "evil", and therefore to some people darkness = bad. Maybe this is because chaos is harder to comprehend than is order, since we as humans love to define things that we perceive.

An extreme of either side (light, dark; chaos, order; discord, harmony) can lead to skewed perceptions and bad judgement, in my opinion.

I think that a truly mature, intelligent race can shut the darker thoughts away, and end things like war, hunger, poverty, and human cruelty to their fellows...

Sometimes the price of darkness can be too high...

I doubt it, personally, but it's something to shoot for.

But then...would it even be freedom, if we had only the light and nothing else to choose from? Would we even know that it was light if we had no darkness with which to compare it?

I highly recommend that you read "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz. I think you will gain a lot from it.
