Date: 2006-02-02 03:54 pm (UTC)Latin poetry is particularly challenging. Latin doesn't have a completely structured word order based upon sentence placement...
So basically imagine you can put an adjective three lines down from the noun it modifies. Yep... you can do that in Latin. You can put verbs wherever you want. You can wrap nouns and their adjectives around whole phrases for the sake of something called "chiasmus". And then there is determining the meter of Dactylic Hexameter...
Latin love poetry is a nightmare. You have to get the meaning and the cadence and still put it into proper grammatical English, even with all the parts of speech scattered about to the four winds. And if you are very, very lucky, you get punctuation and spacing between words. If you translate the original text, you have nothing separating any of this.
This, my friend, is why I'll never make a career out of translating Latin. I'd end up shooting myself in the skull to release the pressure.
