I think so;
we can alter the 'dressing', as it were,
but I think it still happens

I don't know if it affects anyone else, but I know it affects me. There are too many little coincidences in my life...statistically too many for them to BE coincidences.

Natural fates like death or specific reactions to certain stimuli or interactions, yes. The trouble, at least in my opinion, is that people tend to confuse or lump in fate with coincidences and machinations.

No. If I knew, it would make me lazy. See, there's Good Lazy and there's Bad Lazy. That knowing would enable Bad Lazy.

No. See, this is one of the issues I had with religion -- the idea that everything that happens is part of God's plan. If that's true, what's the point of God even giving us free will? I couldn't buy into the idea, in fact, I was very uncomfortable with the idea, that all the shit in my life was part of some big ultimate plan. Like a lesson I was supposed to learn from.

When I studied the existentialists in college, that made sense to me -- our choices dictating where our lives go. No fate, no destiny. Nothing predetermined. Only me and my choices. Besides, personally, I much like the idea that my boyfriend and I met because of the choices we made in our lives, because of who we are, not because it was fate. Knowing it was destined to happen kind of takes some of the fun out.

Not wanting to offend anyone, but the idea of "if it's meant to be, it will be" is lazy thinking. If you want something, go after it! Don't wait around to find out if destiny has it store for you. Don't be passive -- it's your life! Don't waste it waiting for life to happen.

A great answer :D

What about luck / karma... Do you think it balances out?

Karma falls under the same heading as destiny and fate -- the idea that there is some force out there beyond our control that effects our lives.

Luck ... luck is tricky. What some people call luck, others label as God's intervention ("Wow. He got really lucky -- if that bullet had been a half-inch to the left he would have died. Someone must have been looking out for him"). So, how do we define luck? Good things that happen to you? That's completely arbitrary -- there is no definitive answer of what is "good" in a person's life. Take the lottery. A millionaire winning the lottery is no big deal, no one cares. But if a waitress were to win the same lottery, boy, did she get lucky! Me? When it comes to the lottery, it's not luck. It's picking the right numbers on the right day. It's a matter of choice

No. There is no fate, nor destiny that determines our path. Only normal cause and effect.

I agree with Belgarath. A turnip can sit there and say, "What will be, will be". I'm supposed to be a little more resourceful.

I say to the gods...............And the sons of gods
The things which whet my thoughts;
By the wells of the world.......There is none with the might
To make me do his will.

I rather like miracles. To take the bullet scenario, people would call it a miracle if the bullet pinged off of an electrical wire and missed a man's head by half an inch. A miracle! Wouldn't it be a miracle, still, if that bullet's course was altered, ever so slightly, so that it hit the man's head?

i believe that Fate plays a huge roles in our lives, but i also believe that she plays fair, too...Fate gives clues as to what is going to happen and even how you can change what is about to happen...i dont really know how to explain what i mean....but i believe Fate always leaves a person with two planned out roads and that person choses which road to take...but they can always change lanes and yeah, i don't know...am i making any sense at all? ♥ ~Sam~

well I think it's like destiny, to a certain extent yes but I think it's largely due to our choices... like in a single moment there are millions of sheets of paper that are almost the same but slightly different and we can only pick one at a given time. I think that destiny is a more like a sequence of choices.

I think we were all given a plan, a blueprint so to speak. We were also allowed choices so we may move away from the initial direction if we choose it and even alter it to a certain extent. But I do believe also that if there was something we needed to gain/learn/find, no matter the roads we will find it because of fate. We can't run away from the truth, no matter what choices we pick and run with.
