When last did you stay up all night, and what did you do?

You've never pulled an all nighter before an exam?

nope. I can't function if I don't sleep, so that would not really be very productive.

It was 1967. I was in Viet Nam in the highlands with my spotter, Kalichecky. We'd been up all night waiting for the head of the NVA's version of their special operations program at their secret base. The Company said he was a general, code-name: HYDRA.

We'd been dodging patrols and mosquitoes the size of hawks when HYDRA came out with his entourage up to the deck for his morning tea and Pravda. Kalichecky call the wind and distance, and I took aim.

The mosquito that he was about to swat with his Pravda suddenly exploded, yelling "Damn you McNamara!" before the report was heard echoing in the valley like some ominous portent of doom. HYDRA went pale and dropped his tea. The message was clear: don't you dare use pre-sweetened Lipton and call it Twining's of London and while we're at it we can get you when we want.

Kalichecky and I had exfiltrated and were hitching a ride down the Pho Dat Thang River with some leeches on a log, long before the NVA could even react. We had been awake twenty-seven hours using only C-ration coffee and bad jokes told through sign language to keep us awake and fresh; most of the jokes were lost in translation.

Somewhere in the distance, a bird cawed...

EPILOGUE:

Years later, I saw HYDRA in Provo, Utah. He was running a very good pizzeria called Maria's of Hanoi, living the American dream. He took my order. I asked for two slices of pepperoni and Lipton tea. He went pale again and dropped his pencil, but he smiled when I smiled. He sends me a Christmas card every year.

Um....Months and months ago. I did coke and pot all night and gave head and had sex all night long. Seriously, ALL NIGHT LONG. I think towards the end he didn't want anymore, but I was still rearing to go.
