Is it better to consider every step carefully, or follow your instinct?

depends.
it's a question of a "golden mean", I think.

if you're gonna consider every step carefully you're gonna lose a lot of good chances, but then if you go by instinct every time you risk to go wrong a lot...still, if you don't make mistakes you don't learn things, even if sometimes those lessons can turn out not worthy the pain...and so on...

it depends...i say consider very well the truly important steps and fallow the instinct with the small decisions...still, if you don't have good instincts...think twice :P

It all depends.....

As said by the above post, instinct guides your initial decision. However, if I found myself in a friendly mine field without any guidance, I would carefully consider where I placed my foot each time.

Once I was out, I would follow my instinct and kick the arse off the idiot who forgot to put up the warning signs.
If said idiot was my superior, I would carefully consider the best method of arse-kicking which would minimize the chance of me being demoted or locked up.

Why can't it be both? I think it's important to trust yourself, but, at the same time, running head first into something without thinking it through thoroughly could leave you in a lot of trouble. So, yes, follow your instincts, take those risks, but also be sure to think ahead and have a Plan B :-)

personally, i'm a big fan of having things planned, with contingency plans, emergency evacuation procedures, and a good ol' dose of elbow grease and gumption. however, since god hates people, plans are generally fruitless, and it helps to have your instincts well-developed.

and that's how you answer a question without actually answering it.

plans are better.

Both:) I know the former is the right thing to do; but damn if I don't nearly always do the latter anyway.

I follow my instincts intially, but thereafter plan very carefully in order to achieve my goal. My instincts are usually the impetus for a major decision, but I very rarely let them loose when dealing with the rest of the project.
