In the former, the user is a person able to justify a negative behavior (the latter) with a positive spin.

Eg: Being fired without cause is aggressive corporate behavior. Being fired with fictioned cause that hides the fact that the company simply wants more profit and has decided you're expendable, is assertive action taken on behalf of the shareholders.

A man who beats a passerby for fifty cents change is aggressive. A man who beats a passerby because of the frustration of poverty and its resultant hunger, needs the fifty cents to survive, and is therefore simply an assertive victim celebrating his right to share in the pie of life.

(If you believe I believe any of this.... You must think I'm aggressive, when really, I'm just assertive)
