Assertive is yelling.....Aggressive is with a punch. LOL or or or wait.....Assertive is yelling with a certs in your mouth. and Aggressive is yelling with a fist in your mouth. LOL
In the former, the user is a person able to justify a negative behavior (the latter) with a positive spin.
Eg: Being fired without cause is aggressive corporate behavior. Being fired with fictioned cause that hides the fact that the company simply wants more profit and has decided you're expendable, is assertive action taken on behalf of the shareholders.
A man who beats a passerby for fifty cents change is aggressive. A man who beats a passerby because of the frustration of poverty and its resultant hunger, needs the fifty cents to survive, and is therefore simply an assertive victim celebrating his right to share in the pie of life.
(If you believe I believe any of this.... You must think I'm aggressive, when really, I'm just assertive)
They way I see it, assertive is when you take action and go and "do" something. It's not about doing something to anyone, it's just doing something about a situation you wish to either complete, continue, or are enthused with. The word motivated could also be used instead.
The word "aggressive" however to me implies anger and violence be it via yelling, hitting, silent looks, mood penetrations, all that emotional game stuff people do. Yes people can be agressive to also complete, continue etc but when they are they are usually pushy, rude, inconsiderate, in a rush, often violent, and at the very least impolite.
Therefore, my conclusion is that there is a big difference between the two. Your take on the matter?
other than connotation, i don't think there is one. assertive has a more positive connotation, thanks to the dog whisperer and his penchant for calling bad behavior "aggressive."
