no... it's just that those who can't create art, or sometimes even appreciate it, are the ones who refer to themselves as sane...

That's a great slant on it... I'm of the opinion that the creative faculty itself is hard to understand, hence it's almost always misunderstood :)

no...it's just those that don't understand art that say artists are mad, because they just don't understand...and people tend to disagree with what they don't understand and call it wrong, stupid, mad and so on...so artists are normal...the others have a problem *rolls eyes* :P

Artists always tend to stray from what is normal, always have a little bit of eccentricity in their personalities, are generally very outspoken, usually defy the mainstream (and the government, haha!) ... having all these traits make those other "sheep" in society view you as "mad" since artists can be so brazen about their views and life and self and it always seems to go against what is seen as acceptable behavior. I don't know if artists ARE actually mad, it's just the term attached to them by outsiders.

No. Creativity + hard work = art. (This is, incidentally, why I have produced no art to speak of. I hate hard work. If madness were all that was needed, I'd be well on my way already.)

Madness can be a plus (James Christiansen) or a minus (Phillip Pullman) and it certainly affects the art...but it's not a requirement.

Before I answer that, I want a definition of "mad", "sane", and "artist".
That aren't personally offensive.

define mad?

There is no doubt in my mind that an artist needs to be inventive and thinkg differently. There is no doubt that pain creates some of the best features, but so does happiness. If being slightly mad is developing dependancy issues and a fear of failure... then yes, some of the best were insane loopy people.

Van Gough cut his ear off. Jim morrison was a self identified lizard king. Lennon said he was bigger then christ.

You figure it out.

That feeling you get from a piece of art... that WOW factor... can only be deliverered from an artist that is in some way away from normal. You just wouldn't care about something that lacks any life or emotion. And since the drive to express one self's emotion to strangers is not normal... that would make ALL artists mad.
