Eye contact, but I will strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone. Years of being waitress and working in the job i'm in now prove to me just how deceiving appearences are.

That you actually want to get to know the person who sits in the corner with the shifty eyes because they are really just shy and don't know where to rest their eyes.

Or the person who falls into the back of the crowd because they are the best conversationalists they just don't know how to put the words out there in a group.

The person who looks at you like you are evil because they are intelligent and are trying to figure out if you can see it or if you're like everybody else...

I talk to anyone who is friendly to me. If you are talking about a member of the opposite sex though, it is beautiful eyes that will make me strike up a convo.

If someone has that "I need help but I am NOT asking for it" look I'll speak up with conversation first then happen to ask an appropiate question to lead them to an answer or eye contact.
