I still remember my very first kiss with Scott, as it was the most memorable for me. I was 14 going on 15 (great...the "Sound of Music" song is now going to be in my head all day) and it was the last summer I could attend Camp Indian Springs as a camper. I went there every year...loved it. But I wasn't interested in coming back as a counselor and getting paid $80 a week for a 24 hour a day job.
"Blackhawk" (Scott - all counselors used fake names) & I flirted mercilessly the entire week at camp. Even though that was fun, I wasn't really interested in him. I focused my attentions on RedWolf (or something like that). I don't really remember his name now.
Every Friday they had a dance before everyone went home Saturday morning. Scott ("Blackhawk") danced with me once, and made me promise to dance with him again. I just said "yeah, yeah" and didn't give it much more thought. They started playing "Never Say Goodbye", and here comes Blackhawk, grabbing my hand and tugging me to the dance floor. I told him I'd get the next one, and he told me, "No - there isn't going to be a next one. This is the last song of the night."
So, we danced. At the end of the song, they turned the lights out for just a few seconds, and in that moment, he kissed me. And I swear to all that is holy, it was knee-weakening; I saw fireworks; I felt it throughout my entire body. All those silly cliché phrases people use to describe the ultimate kiss...really did happen. I was totally taken off guard. But, the night was over, and we had to go back to our separate sides of camp.
The next morning we were all supposed to leave. My dad came bright and early to pick me up, and I made him drive over to the boys' side of the camp. I had already gotten everyone's name, phone numbers and addresses that I [thought I] wanted. And Blackhawk wasn't one of them. But, after that kiss, I had to get Scott's. I found his cabin, got his info, and called him a week later.
And now...more than a decade later...we're getting married. Pretty cool, huh?
