Wow. I wish I had thought of that answer. Well stated. It seems that in the end, we all conform, but the question really should be how often do we defy?
I new a guy who in high school who wouldn't leave the house unless he was in a three piece suit, two-tone wing tips, and a fedora. He said he was rebelling against the rebellion.
Once in awhile, but most of the time I'm okay with being the weird brainy girl. I've even been introduced to new co-workers as, "This is Brenda, she's a little strange, but you'll get used to it."
Not that I do actually conform to general society, but sometimes I think I'm going to lose everything if I don't.
Sometimes I have been known to conform in other ways though - saying what someone wants to hear or feels comfortable hearing, rather than what I actually want to say. Not often, but it happens.
In some ways. We are, after all, a social species. If you live in any society at all, you conform; you agree to maintain or further certain common actions or points of view that others in your society have also agreed to in order to live in a state of being that you find desirable. Even if you are thinking of not doing something outside what you think that society will accept because of the possible backlash, you feel pressure to conform.
In my job yes, because they pay me (or will one day pay me hahaha). But otherwise, never. I used to at the beginning of college, but then found friends who like me for who I am. I'm such a non-conformist that I even conform to some pop-culture things when I want and don't conform when I don't want.
Now, I feel like I've shed that second skin I hid behind and the only people around left after that aren't the type to try and change me. It feels good now to breathe easy, grow up and just be myself (no apologies for it, too).
Heh... Boo being all the same! Conformity is such a loser-ish idea.
No, not really. The idea that all people have to be the same is, yes, but conformity is much bigger than that. When we don't murder people at the store because they annoy us, we are conforming. When we wear clothes (and I'm glad we do), we are conforming. When we don't light someone else's house on fire because we think it's ugly, we are conforming.
I'm assuming you don't do any of these things, and thus you conform. Living in a human society, 99% conform more than we rebell.
I used to. In some ways, I still do, although it's not something that is coming from those close to me anymore. It's more of a society thing, but I doubt that will ever change. I'll probably always feel pressure from society to do things like have children, dress "normal", and become a social animal. I could care less though. I'm just me. Other people can like it or lump it.
I've noticed that being an artist kind of gives me a free out with people though. Once I explain that to people, it's like they expect me to be weird, edgy, or even a little crazy. People almost seem disappointed when artists are too Average Joe or Jane, I guess, so I satisfy their need to believe in that stereotype. Eh... whatever works, I guess. At least they leave me alone.
