My summers growing up were great! Sleeping outside every night, spending all day at the river swimming, sleeping in the shade, cliff jumping, eating fried chicken, reading for hours on the river banks.
I just remember how much fun it was to spend allllllll day down by the lake (which for my town was the beach). Ah, life before a job! hahahahah
And then you'd come home all burnt and go back the next day with those big old shirts your parents would make you wear to protect yourself. Not too long later you'd take off the shirt once healed and do the whole process again. ahhahahaha
My favorite memories are spending my summers in South Texas with my Grandma. She taught me how to make tamales and tortillas, she took me to the library and Dairy Queen and it was first experiences with volunteering in a nursing home. I miss those days. I miss her.
Long sunny days spent with my grandparents in the summer at Kalamalka country club - swimming and playing ball tag with the other kids out on the raft, reading, playing tennis, the inevitable Fudgesicle, playing frisbee... Ah... those were the days. :)
I refer to it as the summer of concerts :) My brother and I and mix of our friends went to so many shows that summer! We worked together at a local restaurant and our co-workers used to ask us "which concert are we paying for this payday?" *grin* Awesome memories!
tough question because there are so many favorite summer memories... from going to baseball games, to attending outdoor concerts, to those lazy days of summer, to friends' bbqs, etc. and then from my youth, family vacations to Cedar Point and to up north in Michigan.
Even though it always signals the end of summer, spending time at the Minnesota State Fair. I love the fair, the people watching, the food, good times...I look forward to it each year.
I guess any happy summer memories I have come from the years I spent in England, simply because that's the only place I've ever lived where the weather didn't completely kill me for three months (as you know I don't respond well to heat or sun and pretty much hibernate until autumn). I was able to lounge in the back garden and barbecue and everything, so that was lovely. I wish every place I live could have summers like England's.
When I was a kid, we would get up at 3 AM to hoe weeds in my grandpa's cotton field. He would pay us 10 cents a row. We'd finish by about 7 because the sun would be up by then, and it would be too hot. Then we'd go swimming most of the afternoon. Then I would read mysteries the rest of the evening. Those were good summers. :)
My favorite summer memory is the summer of 2006. We took our two children to Virginia Beach. It was their very first time going to the ocean and it was a fabulous experience! Here's some pics from that trip:
Getting to spend a whole week at my grandparents' house. I got to watch all the shows my dad didn't like me watching! My grandpa would take me along to have coffee with all of his old man friends, "help" him in the garage (he had a small trucking business, and he'd be working on semi's), and other fun stuff. Grandma and I would go for walks around town and just hang out.
They are both gone now, and I miss them terribly, but they hang around!
Late night beach baseball! A group of us would all jam into our bosses van and travel to Barry Ireland after work (It closed at 9pm) We'd have a great workout and play any type of game, chase each other, sing 'blue moon' at the moon and then we'd get courageous and dive into the icy cold ocean! We never ever use to have any other spare clothing (You think we'd learn, wouldn't you?) and waddle back to the van all soaked and sandy. Great times!
Going to the lake. I loved going to the lake. I hated the sun, but I never really worried about it. I was always covered and smart about the sun. But I miss the freedom there. No phones, no emails, nothing. Just good food, beer and family.
But nowadays, no food for me, certainly no beer and my family, including me, cannot afford the trips.
My first summer working at the Boy Scouts of America summer camp. I was 14 years old, and such a boyish girl. I fit in perfectly there. It was hard work, but OH so much fun! I taught merit badges, taught the info the boys needed to know to pass them off... and in the afternoons I helped the lifeguards at the swimming pool. That was my favorite part! In the summers to come, I became a lifeguard myself and was there for 6 more years after. I LOVED it. :D
My first kiss...Chris and I would meet and walk old trails one day it started to pour rain that was when we kissed in the pouring rain in the woods in the middle of the summer. :D. It was my first kiss...the perfect first kiss
