All snarking aside, I think it is very hard to totally avoid conflict. In many respects, avoiding drama is good, but to avoid all conflict at all costs leaves one with a pathological fear of pushing back against what is wrong.
I am sorry that there were people who misinterpreted friendly comments as something more than what it was. I think the real question is "Why do people feel the need to CREATE conflict where there was non to start with?"
I think the answer to that is boredom and diverting/attracting attention.
