I don't feel you have to 'risk everything' to realise dreams, but maybe that is just my perspective. I guess I live my life based on my dreams, as in I know what I want and desire so I live my life working towards realising said dreams. Not very romantic, or daring, but gets me there in the end.
I believe dreams are like a to do list, things I will do or have or be, rather then just wishful thinking.
this is difficult. risking everything is maybe a bit strong, and i think it depends on what dream you have. i was once ready to risk everything for a very big dream, but i recently realised it wasn't worth it. i think, to risk everything, it has to be a very strong dream, a dream you've had for ages, and a dream you know will change your life for the better. but at the same thing, i don't think anyone should limit their dreams. reach for the stars, and all that.
p.s. i love these questions of the day of yours! it's the most thinking i do in a day :)
I think one must attempt to maintain a modest amount of realism with regard to dreaming, otherwise you will be sorely disapointed. That being said, reality is relative. Once you have distinguished your parameters for what is acceptable to aspire to... DONT EFFING STOP!!
One has to determine how important that dream is, and then how much are they willing to give up to obtain it, realise it. Not all dreams are worth someone's everything. Some are figments of the real thing. With no true worth. So why give up everything for a figment of smoke .... that one can never hold onto ...
Some folks would tell you that it's better to risk everything to follow that dream because even if you fail, you can look back and know that you did your best. The fact is, however, that hindsight is both 20/20 and 50/50. More on that later.
The trouble with chasing one's dream is that if one has never been goal-oriented, one can easily risk things stupidly for something that, in the long run, might not be worthy of one's commitments. Goal-oriented people know how to manage their lives in order to pursue what they want. It's their lifestyle and an ingrained part of their psyche. Within their minds is the capacity to see what went wrong on the road to their conquests with crystal clarity. For them, hindsight is 20/20. Those who aren't generally speaking as goal-oriented sometimes succeed or sometimes fail. When they fail, they don't move on to the next project in their lives. Instead, they dwell on their shattered dreams wondering what would've, could've, should've happened, in the land of "if only." For them, hindsight is 50/50. For them, failure rots the dream. These are the people who chase the dream without knowing that they are running on worn leg stumps. They are like ghosts, still alive, haunting their dreams. They are stalkers.
Honestly, I think that the answer to the question is this: How consuming is the dream?
I tend to be a risk averse person, so I would say limit your dreams.. but I am learning so much with this new phase of life. Maybe a happy balance is the key.
For the longest time, I limited/elimitated my dreaming. Grew up being tempted by dreams that could never be fullfilled, learned to not dream and to only plan for the immediate future. It's not a fun way to live life. Slowly, and increasingly in speed, I am letting myself dream again.
As intellegent beings, we need hope. It gets us through the rough and hard times of our lives. Dreams provide that hope. To limit them, especially to the extreme of eliminating them, is to shatter ourselves. But to dream the impossible is to do the same.
I want to cry out "Risk everything, follow your dream" but find myself saying "...but it is not just everything of mine I risk, but of those who depend on me as well." To me, it is a balance and depends on your situation. If all you risk is yours, then risk everything for your dreams. Just be careful that you are not waking up one day to find yourself jousting against windmills.
(I know, I'm wimping out on an answer but it's my two cents. :-) )
if you yearn for that dream don't just chase it; catch it...there might be obstacles and pain involved in turning that dream into reality, but you should do it...it's worth it...not many people believed in me that i could publish a book, but i did it all by myself and it felt so damn good to rub their faces in it and i felt accomplished, i am independent and can catch my dreams, i can do what i want! :D so, risk it all to catch that dream of yours ♥ ~Sam~
Plant the seeds of many dreams tend every vine and bloom that dares to grow water with hope, warm with the light of love prune and cultivate with faith and joy
the dreams that die may be buried left to lie beneath the good soil of the heart enriching it for new roots and new life fresh young dreams will grow tall on the strength of those long dead
the seeds that are never planted dry and wither and one day, unnoticed, blow away
I consider myself lucky to have a healthy working relationship with my dreams; they tell me stuff; I work with it; then we move on. they guide me beyond risk love and blessed be xxx

If it's just a side quest that will be more trouble than it is worth... either wait for a better time or edit the dream.
