We have more words to describe pain and darkness (because we can express these through a gamut of emotions more complex than happiness etc) and because of this our imagination can soar deeper (and our questions are deeper too when we question pain and bad things) .. and so darkness and pain take on another dimension. I think we accept that we should be happy and have love ... but pain and darkness are unacceptable and often seen as very bad things thus drawing people's attention more (it takes more of our emotions to deal with this than the other happier emotions).
Light is the medium for every illusion. Darkness can hide you, protect you those looking for you to further some nefarious purpose. It can be a shield. Light simply reveals. It shows you what looks like a delicious apple, but not that it might be rotten within.
Darkness and light each have its own purpose, its own place in all schemes. I think that ultimately, whether darkness or light is perceived as attractive is determined by how well it's marketed. Slick movie action heroes killing off hundreds of henchmen like in The Matrix are more attractive than some trailer-trash crack-whore killing dozens of johns at the interstate highway rest-stops.
