I believe that there's a time limit... if I respect someone, and nothing comes back, then the respect wanes...

I see how you mean. I was thinking on a different level of respect, much like respect for say... Michelangelo or Einstein. They could never respect me. But face to face respect is a much different sword, and I agree with you completely.
