Considering it's one of the most POPULAR reasons... I would have to say it's been readily accepted a long, long time ago.
The only other reason I can think of, at present time, that comes close to 'religion' as a reason for conflict is greed.

Definitely true. But greed is not something that you can advertise as your motivations...
In today's world it's quite acceptable to engage in conflict over religion, security, and delivering democracy.

Now that's where we differ. I still maintain all of those things are 'polite' forms of saying "I'm a greedy bastard. Gimme what I want, or I'm gonna kick your ass."
