I don't know about acceptable or unacceptable, but my opinion is that it's a foolish reason for conflict.

Appearantly only if your way of worship pleases your deity enough that he allows you to win. Ironically, religion is supposed to be about peace.

No!! I guess I just dont understand why people cant accept that someone else believes differently than them. As long as it's not harming someone else I dont see why people care so much. I guess I'm more of a "live and let live" type of person who always tries to respect other people's point of view and I like to learn things from other people who I may not always agree with. There is truth in every religion, in my opinion and what works for me might not work for someone else. If it brings them happiness then I respect that.

I suppose it depends on how you define "conflict." A conflict is not always violent, and sometimes conflicts are necessary. The American civil rights movement involved a conflict between citizens and corrupt laws, and many of the people who protested segregation did so because of their religious beliefs. Another good example would be World War I, during which, in the United States, people of the Amish, Mennonite, and Hutterite faiths refused to allow themselves to be drafted. This put them in conflict with the government, which jailed hundreds of them.

Not all conflicts are violent, and not all conflicts are unnecessary.

no. and this is where i have issues w/religion. so much faith/belief/etc and yet so much pain/suffering/death always comes out of it. makes no sense to me.

Considering it's one of the most POPULAR reasons... I would have to say it's been readily accepted a long, long time ago.

The only other reason I can think of, at present time, that comes close to 'religion' as a reason for conflict is greed.

Religion = conviction, yes? Or, at least, it seems to me that it should. So the question becomes "is conviction an acceptable reason for conflict". To which I would have to answer "yes". No point having convictions if one is just planning to abandon them at the first hint of adversity. Personally, I like to avoid conflict wherever possible, and I wish more people did likewise, but there are some things more important than my blood-pressure.

no its not. not in any way shape or form everyone is entitled to an opinion. And they need to respect other people opinions and beliefs and not grow so hostile or violent that someone does not agree with them.

I don't think so, but I think it is the core of most conflicts. As those with strong beliefs of any kind often label them with a religious doctrine. It just seems foolish, many religions are saying the same thing in slightly different ways, yet, they cannot get on. The hypocricy is amazing and the intolerance of other not in their religion just takes my breath away. It is part of the reason my mother raised me devoid of religion. When she was growing up her family were devout Roman Catholics, she got pregnant at age 16, the church kicked her out, took away her communion rights and would not let her be seen or go to mass. The preist came to the hospital the day I was born and told her if she did not have be babptised in the next five days I would be damned to hell. Scare tactics, nice, ha?

So from then on, neither she nor I have been into any organised religion. I do not believe in God, but I do believe in spiritualty, things unexplainable.
