In the trailer. There's a mish-mash of times, but it's all the same action. All the lights are off. The couch is made up into Mom & Dad's bed. All 5 of us are cuddled up under the blankets, hearing the rain on the roof... but also hearing Jean-Michel Jarre's "Equinoxe" or "Oxygene" on the record player. It's a perfect counterpoint to the rain outside and it's comforting yet magical at the same time.
I have two. When I was little and sitting on my Dad's lap while watching TV. And, sleeping next to John, having him wrap himself around me. THAT is the most amazing way to fall asleep :)
Doing my 2-mile qualifying run at Ft. Huachuca on a February morning at dawn and watching the rising sun turn the purple quartz orange. I chopped 30 seconds off my running time then. I was in the best shape of my life. Totally Zen moment.
Just like a memory of success, or a memory of pure happiness, a memory of peace can help you find that feeling again, as you go through trying times...
I'm sure it's not my most peaceful memory but I do call on it often...
I've written about it before - it's become my mental oasis. The desert garden at the Cameron Trading Post in Arizona. It was a rare beautiful sight for me - I'm so used to seeing a tropical type of beauty and I was in awe of the differnce. It was a late afternoon walk through the gardens with Ralph after a long, hot day of sight seeing in Arizona. Being in the presense of my love in that mini desert oasis of unusual plants/cactus, colorful tiles, rough stucco, the sound of runing water, a gorgeous desert sunset in the making and hummingbirds. Hmmmmm. My words don't do it justice.
Anyway, while I was living it, I didn't realize how much it was affecting me and how often I'd replay those moments in my mind.
A couple of years back...I don't know when exactly, but it was autumn and I was lying in a string hammock staring up at the slender trees around me and their golden clusters of leaves. It was total and complete peace. Not just a blank calmness, but a rapturous peace.
Driving across Penrose Park on a quad during a lightnight storm. Stuck on the top of the Big Horn Mountains in that weather (no rain, just scary lightening when you are in the middle of a huge meadow) on the back of a quad was just a moment of submission to "whatever will be, will be" and having that release of pressure for good or bad, was the most peaceful moment I've experienced thus far...
