I just like the idea of listing what I'm thankful for, and this year, the list is long:

I'm thankful for...
...being able to be me
...my kids
...my friends
...my God
...my family
...my job
...writing
...being able to face the world with a smile, and not having it forced

But most of all, the one thing I'm proudest of, and the one thing I will defend, even though I don't defend the elected authorities, I'm proud of this land I live in.

I think Mr Shakespeare said it best:

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

~ William Shakespeare - King Richard II. Act ii. Sc. 1.

See, we all need to get together and get rid of the governments... after that, everything will be great!

I haven't read that before (having not read King Richard II) but it's beautiful.

Someone should put music to it and make it the national anthem.

Much better than God Save the Queen anyway...

There's an older version of God Save the Queen that is much less insipid.

Is there? I agreed with the cricket fans though when they suggested:

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green
And was the holy lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills
And was Jerusalem builded there
Among those dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow (my bow) of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my (my) sword sleep in hand
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

England

I love the hymn, but looking at the state of Jerusalem right now, I'm not sure building it here would be so good.

I love the Welsh national anthem. It praises the country, the poets and the language.

Here's one of my patriotic songs:

A Sovereign Nation Still.
Tune: Tramp, Tramp, Tramp.

Stand up straight and sing aloud
You have reason to be proud
And to love your nation cannot break its law.
If to Britain you are true, shout "Trafalgar, Waterloo!"
And then whisper with a sly grin, "Agincourt!"

We are not a part of Europe,
Nor a region on their map.
Through our courage and God's will
We're a sovereign nation still,
And we'll never be enticed into their trap.

Will we lose our pounds and pence?
Oh now, come along, talk sense!
Swap our fine historic sterling for their muck?
Use their Bank of Toytown cash?
I would sooner face the lash
And if you trust eurobanks I wish you luck.

We are not a part of Europe,
Nor a region on their map.
Through our courage and God's will
We're a sovereign nation still,
And we'll never be enticed into their trap.

If you think we're left behind,
You are either mad or blind.
We're ahead of them, that's why they want us in.
They would fleece us while we're rich,
Then they'd dump us in the ditch,
But they won't, my friend, because we're going to win!

We are not a part of Europe,
Nor a region on their map.
Through our courage and God's will
We're a sovereign nation still,
And we'll never be enticed into their trap.

The Armada was returned,
All its vessels bruised and burned
And Napoleon was harshly taught respect.
We are good to have as friends,
But attacked, our kindness ends
And if Europe pushes us it will be wrecked.

We are not a part of Europe,
Nor a region on their map.
Through our courage and God's will
We're a sovereign nation still,
And we'll never be enticed into their trap.
