Is it truly better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all?

I like to have parameters before engaging in philosophical discussion.

Deepest Love, for sake of argument, I'll consider an abiding soul-level relationship that probably includes some degree of physical intimacy.

My answer: If you grow up knowing about the concept of "love", then yes, it is better to have the experience at least once, hopefully for a bountiful amount of time. Humanity is in love with the concept of LOVE. Actually, we're downright obsessed with the romantic notions of it. Every fairy tale and great epic drama includes it. Poems and graffiti have been written about it since humans formed civilizations. It tends to be a bit of a let down when you realize that you really have to work at maintaining a relationship. Most stories only show infatuation, which isn't actually LOVE... it is the first doorway into desiring to know a person so intimately that you fall in love with them over time.

But honestly, if a person doesn't know of or understand the concept, I don't think they should bother. It's too much like a 90 year old person getting on the internet for the first time on their first computer. Full of hassles and strife for themselves and the people they encounter... and unnecessary to maintain their way of life.

I prefer to let you set the parameters according to your feelings :D

So if you don't know what it is, how can you miss it?

How do you explain the feelings associated with the deepest form of love to someone?

Well, it's a little hard not to know what it is... it's everywhere. It's flavor and spice for media. Did you know that Roman graffiti used to say the same things ours does? "Germanus amat Julia." Seriously. People designated gods and goddesses just to monitor Love. Think about that. People set up pantheons in order to enable some control over Love. It's actually rather amazing. How many women and men have prayed to Aphrodite to gain the mate of their infatuation? I don't even want to begin to calculate. Hells... people still do it, today. I'm just thinking about this... and I'm amazed! Over a simple feeling that begins with ego, subconscious desires, and the biological need for union with another of our own kind... for companionship and (possibly) procreation. Our capacity for love begins with chemicals inside of our brain. And yet, it can override the basic self-preservation instinct.

Anyway...

I wouldn't actually describe in words what deepest love feels like. If they absolutely had to know, I'd have to play a song for them, or show them art, or both. It has to be something artistic, abstract and absolutely moving, because love must be felt in order to be understood.

Very true...

But love can be different for different people too... Come to think of it, my question is quite a personal one...

LOL! How can a question like that not be personal? A lot of the questions you post are like that, but I figure that is why you post them. To see what all the different answers are and compare them to your own.

Very very true...

Although, I never thought this one would be that deep...

The answers always give me food for thought though...
