my dad: FISHING!!! and doing everything with him my grandparents: just being with them. my mom worked out of the house and my dad worked in the house, when he wasnt traveling, so we were up there a lot growing up. and we would bake and play cards and do homework and all kinds of things. and the trips to the lake in the summer, thats awhole nother round of stories. my grandparents made me who i am. my parents did too, but my grandparents and dad taught me soooo much about life. i did everything with them. used to look forward to comin home just to go and be with them. random other people: those that got me through the last year and are still there for me, i can never tell them thank you enough. so yeah
Mr. McClure when he took my poetry/short story journal away from me, read it while watching a movie in class, then later him saying "Nikki, you were born to do this."
my parents. they taught me perserverance, patience, kindness, etc. of course, i didn't begin to really manifest any of these things until i was about 30 something.~paul
Mom and Dad taught me that I can change things for myself. Ron P. taught me to think outside the Western box. His folks taught me that, like an arm or leg, a mind can be broken and to watch out for that. Bill H. taught me to enjoy my imagination. The Army taught me patience and what was the oldest female admiral in the Navy taught me leadership (I saw her on 60 Minutes). Jeff L. taught me how to write better by at least two orders of magnitude and how to really help a friend in grave need. Nan is teaching me how to be in a meaningful relationship.
So many, many people have influenced me in profoundly positive ways that I can't just call out one above others. Even if I subscribed to any particular school of divinity, I couldn't put a deity above the people who have influenced me because I've only learn about them through priests, who, if influential, are subsequently part of that mass. I don't think I can really answer.
Mm...prolly the husband. My love for him is the closest thing I have to what C.S. Lewis called "Gift-love" (as opposed to "Need-love"). Because of this I seek to improve myself not only for my own benefit (if that were my only motivation, none of my efforts would last long) but for his benefit as well. I want him to be proud of me and I want to be the type of wife he deserves, and that inspires me to take care of myself, be healthier in mind and body, be less capricious and more consistent, that sort of thing.
Outside of him, I would say my mom. My dad and I have always been closer, but I inherited all of my favorite talents (writing, singing, the ability to "do voices") from my mom and she taught me by example how to use them to enrich the lives of others.
My Daddy taught me to laugh at myself and a hard situation. He was always chuckling when things got stressed or bad. At the time I thought he was mad (in the head sense) or unfeeling but now I see it as a positive thing. Some people rant and carry on, my Dad laughs.
My Mum, even though she has been my hardest judge and worst critic, has shown me what unfailing loyalty means and inner strength. She would do anything for her children and stands up for herself and those she loves. Her fire and strength keep mine alive. She made me strong in some ways.
My brother, for his loyalty and compassion. Through the hard trials in my life he has always stood by me and stood up for me. No jealous, envy or dislike exists between us. We are there for each other, an unspoken thing, and his character is a beautiful thing. I wish more men had his depth of character.
My son, for without his indominable spirit I could not grow into a mother and individual. He teaches me to take chances, to be a better mother, to see life and things through different eyes and all about patience.
