Is it more important to work for the team, or for yourself?

it depends who the team is...i don't like working in a team (i hate depending on others) when i do things by myself i know they get the way i want and if they are not great at least there's no one else to blame...but now i'm working with my brother and his mates and i do it with a lot of pleasure because i know they are good in what they do and with a team like this it's important to work for them so we all give our best and do something good,but mainly i like working for myself/by myself...

In a collaborative effort, where a common goal is to be reached, it's better to work for the team.  For a personal effort, to reach a personal goal, it's better to work for yourself.  Does that make sense?  Don't mind me, I haven't had my second cup of tea yet.

I've worked in so many team-situations where there have been one or more people only out for themselves and it made the rest of the team deteriorate. When all the members of the team worked "for" the team, the job went smoothly. In situations where the members were serving their own interests, I found myself wanting out quickly. Otherwise, yes, I do like teamwork. ::smiles::

Truly, it depends on what is at stake. Is this a business or personal project?

In the business arena one has to see the broad picture and compromise with various departments of the corporation or clientel. The needs of both must be met and can give rise to unique solutions but not very often.

Personal projects require you to focus on yourself and perhaps the needs of those around you. If it is a truly personal goal like weight loss or furthering knowledge or education then one should be more self-focused.

The somewhere in betweeners call for a blend of the two.

I do my job to the best of my ability. Period. If that just happens to positively affect the "team", then more power to us. But I can't help gagging on the word team as used in the workplace. It's a bit like "associate", it's just another spew of propaganda created to manipulate workers into doing more than they're being paid for.

I would say it depends on the team. (Is there a little bit of an echo in here?)

To be honest, I tend to do a little too much "for the team", but if I am gonna take a daily thwacking, I expect someone to jump in every now and again and take some thwackings for me, too. Otherwise I get a little pissy.

If you're willing to pull at least part of your weight, at least some of the time, I'm all for helping you out, but if you want me to do all your work, and then get pissy that I'm not doing it fast enough to suit you, I am gonna go off on your furry butt!

Well, I will admit that I tend to be a little bit of a Cheez Whiz about this, but if I am already carrying all of your luggage (all six suitcase full of bricks!), I will get a little punchy if you bitch at me because you have to carry your own carry-on bag. ... I'm kinda anti-social feeling these days. My experiences with group dynamics in the church/workplace haven't been too pretty.
I guess I'm in a *refuses to participate* mode, preferring the integrity of one on one.

One on one is a great way, but ultimately, if you don't trust your team, or the dynamic within them is wrong, the it won't work...

You have to work harder for yourself first. That's the foundation with which you build a team: similar goals. A team is nothing but individual selves that express the like of the same thing. Whoever said that there is no "I" in "team" was very wrong.
