Would you rather get an honest opinion, even if it hurts?

My answer: Every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Would you count hiding as dishonesty?

most definitely...if someone lies, the truth will come out at one point and then it will hurt more than if it was told from the beginning..

What if someone simply hides the truth, as opposed to lying?

Yes, at least you can face the pain head-on and move forward rather than be stabbed in the back or made a fool of.

I certainly would like to be told the truth whenever witholding it would hurt me in some way. But, at the same time, there's a point when people can go a bit...crazy with the honesty.

Oh no sweetie, you look beautiful.

I would rather get an honest opinion, BUT done with diplomacy. An honest opinion doesn't have to hurt if it is delivered with love and care.

Yes, but I would like it with the pros and cons and, above all, some tact or bed-side manner. Brutal honesty rarely works well on the recipient and should only be used in an emergency, as a last resort or in general terms. A lot of people would argue against me on my point about brutal honesty, to which I'd likely tell them "bullshit, you're wrong" and then they'd get angry and I'd win the argument, Q.E.D. Tempering the razor of truth can make the edge more effective when cutting out the erroneous. A dull blade can make the work twice as long and twice as shy for the patient.

My 2 cents.

Yes. Of course if it's going to hurt, it might be wise to accompany said honest opinion with chocolate or perhaps a nice gin & tonic. This decreases the chances of the opinion's source being snarked at significantly.
